  • SONG OF HAIDA GWAII_ permanent exhibition in the DUH Berlin

    Dear friends and colleagues,

today I would like to invite you to my exhibition at the Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V.

HAIDA GWAII. Between image and sign.
On the trail of the indigenous people of ravens and eagles

The DUH writes: Haida Gwaii - an archipelago off the coast of British Columbia, Canada, characterized by extraordinary forests and animal species that only occur there - there the indigenous people of the Haida live in harmony with nature. Lisa M. Stybor got to know the First Nation and her island in 2006. The fascination for Stybor was the silence, the power of nature and especially the strength of the animals. Inspired by this energy, images and signs emerged almost as one movement.
    ______________

When I traveled to Haida Gwaii in 2006, in addition to the life of the indigenous people, I was particularly fascinated by the animal world ... the crows, clowns of the air, the pigeon guillemots, small black and white ducks, swimmers on the sea, the tiny deer, the Raven children who just fledged, the bears along the way and the eagles, which I met there as often as the crows here in Germany.

Although, as I often did, I began to approach the island with colored water studies, the color faded and more and more animals came into focus, also through the non-stop noise of the crow people. In addition, there was the study of Haida graphics - powerful, strangely abstracted animals that were often worshiped as gods.

For decades I have been fascinated by the ancient art of calligraphy, first reproduced in the Chinese landscape drawings of earlier centuries, later studied in Japan and Egypt. The writing began with the image. When I look for the Chinese word for the term FOREST, I encounter a sign that reminds me of many trees. BEGINNING WITH THE PICTURE, the writing became more and more abstract over time due to the rhythm of writing.
